flooded basement Nothing is worse than a sump pump back up in your Cranesville basement. This is one of the losses that you want to call a professional for.

Nothing is worse than a sump pump back up in your Cranesville basement. This is one of the losses that you want to call a professional for. And SERVPRO of Erie and Warren Counties, PA has your back when it comes to this gruesome disaster. Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

There are three major types of contaminated water. We will inspect that contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your Platea, North East, Tidioute, and surrounding aeras home or business.

3 Types of Contaminated Water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses.
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated.

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes.
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible. SERVPRO of Erie and Warren Counties, PA are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business. We are available 24/7. However, if you have a pet, then what? How do you help prepare your family pet for a disaster? According to CDC.gov, here a few things you can do to prepare your precious family member:

Why SERVPRO for Your Commercial HVAC Needs

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

HVAC repair According to the Indoor Air Quality Association your units should be checked annually.

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning units otherwise known as HVAC, is an appliance that should be in every business to ensure the comfortability of your customers and employees. The importance of Indoor Air Quality is crucial to any commercial business. Working long hours over the course of years in a building that can have potential toxins circulating through your HVAC units is something no one should have to unknowingly endure. With that being said, when was the last time your HVAC unit has been checked? A few weeks? Months? Or even Years?

According to the Indoor Air Quality Association your units should be checked annually, and they give four reasons why annual checkups are so important!

  • Save Money- Everyone likes to do this! Annual checkups on your units can save you big time in the long run with preventive maintenance. Regular HVAC maintenance is said to reduce the risk of costly breakdowns by as much as 95%.
  • Improves Your Air Quality- The EPA reports that indoor levels of airborne pollutants have the potential to be 2-5 times higher than outdoor levels. Lack of maintenance on HVAC units will heighten and increase the odds of these indoor levels.
  • Improve Your Comfort- You depend on your HVAC system to keep you comfortable year-round. Regular maintenance helps your system produce and distribute the warm or cool air more evenly and steadily.
  • Help the Environment- Keep in mind that a well-maintained HVAC system consumes considerably less fuel – and that is good for the planet.

SERVPRO West Erie County is locally owned and operated, so we are part of this community too. When you have a cleaning or restoration need, we are already nearby and ready to help. The Science Behind Mold and Mold Remediation

8/27/2021 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores. Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors, and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible.

Mold is all too common to Erie homeowners. Even though it is so common, many do not understand mold or mold remediation. Let’s first look into understanding mold and our Mold Restoration Process.

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors, and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce health effects.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

It is hard to believe mold is everywhere, but it is true!

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors, and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy.

We understand mold and mold growth. SERVPRO of West Erie County has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

When you see mold in your Erie home, call the experts at SERVPRO of West Erie County. Before we arrive, refer to these Mold Damage Tips.

Wasted Water

The drip of a shower head might not seem like a lot of water. However, a shower head that drips 10 times an hour loses 2 gallons a day! How Dangerous is a Flash Flood to Erie Residents?

7/1/2021 (Permalink)

A yellow sign says "Water Over Road" SERVPRO of West Erie County is ready to respond 24/7 when your Erie property is in need.

During this time of year, we can often see big storms roll through Erie. With these storms comes heavy rainfall that could ultimately lead to flash flooding. What is flash flooding? Is it dangerous to me? How about my home? SERVPRO of West Erie County is here to answer all your questions.

The National Weather Service defines a flash flood as, “flooding that begins within 6 hours, often within 3 hours, of the heavy rainfall…” These floods happen fast and sometimes without warning. Their sudden appearance makes them dangerous, especially if you encounter high or fast-moving water when traveling.

We know these floods are dangerous, but where are they typically occurring? Flash floods often make smaller creeks and rivers overflow and spill off into the surrounding areas. They also can occur when levees and dams break. If you are in areas near small rivers and streams or dams, you may be at risk of flash floods.

If you are traveling and come across moving flooding over the road, DO NOT drive or walk through it. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you over. If there’s heavy rainfall, avoid those areas mentioned above that are susceptible to flooding.

Like any flooding, homes can certainly be damaged. When this happens, SERVPRO of West Erie County is Here to Help! We are ready to respond with our industry leading Water Restoration Process which consists of:

Step 1: Emergency Contact

Step 2: Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

Step 3: Water Removal / Water Extraction

Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification

Step 5: Cleaning and Sanitizing

Step 6: Restoration

Before SERVPRO of West Erie County arrives, you can follow these Water Damage Tips.

Whenever your property suffers from water damage, get the industry leader in water damage restoration on your side. Is Mold Growing in Your West Erie County Home?

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

image of SERVPRO technician inspecting possible mold growth with a flashlight If you call us at the first sign of this mold growth, we can eliminate the exceeding growth and locate the source of the damage so it doesn’t reoccur

Although April usually brings Spring weather mixed with rain, West Erie homes are no stranger to some unwanted early Spring snow and wintry weather. Although it is more common in the winter months, remember that your roof and attic space are still the most susceptible to the collection of snow and ice. The weight of the snow can oftentimes penetrate into the attic and cause a build of moisture and ultimately mold. And the one thing no one wants more than snow in April, is mold too.

This type of interior damage can be sneaky because it is less noticeable and can spread to other areas quickly. If you are noticing visible mold coming from your attic, check it out with a flashlight. If you see more of it, that means the organism has spread readily throughout the attic space and likely caused significant damages to the structural elements and contents stored in this space. You need a team of professionals that can arrive quickly with the right equipment to remove the growth and begin to return your property to the pre-mold condition.

Our SERVPRO of West Erie County team can help! If you call us at the first sign of this mold growth, we can eliminate the exceeding growth and locate the source of the damage so it doesn’t happen again. We’ll use antimicrobial solutions and air-moving industrial dehumidifiers to retain and remove the moisture.

Remember that we are there to help 24 hours a day. This type of mold damage is something that cannot wait to be treated and it cannot be done by yourself. Call us at (814) 806-1987 or message us on social media via our Facebook page. We all know we often can’t avoid snow in Erie, PA but we can avoid further mold damage to your home!

The Difference between LGR and Conventional Dehumidifiers

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Our professional-grade equipment helps with the toughest of jobs and produces amazing results for our clients.

As a water mitigation company, SERVPRO of West Erie County uses professional-grade equipment to help with the toughest of jobs and produce amazing results for our clients. Having a powerful dehumidifier is a very important tool to have. But what type of dehumidifier do our customers actually need?

That decision usually comes down to two types; Low-Grain Refrigerant (LGR) and Conventional dehumidifiers. Of these two, LGRs are more efficient. They incorporate an extra step in the cooling process which leads to lower air temps in the moisture-filled space.

LGR dehumidifiers use three different types of precooling systems:

  1. Heat Pipe System – this system collects hot air, cools it, then heats and evaporates it once more. This process is repeated over and over with the aim of removing moisture from the air.
  2. Thermal Siphon System – this system uses a stacked hot and cold coil to perform the same type of repeated cycle as the heat pipe system.
  3. Air-to-Air Heat Exchanger – this system uses air to transfer heat rather than liquid refrigerants.

Conventional dehumidifiers condense water vapor by passing air over refrigerated coils. They also contain a heat pipe that prevents frost from forming. When compared to LGR dehumidifiers, Conventional models are not as efficient at removing moisture and drying environments with large volumes of water.

At SERVPRO of West Erie County, we take pride in having state of the art equipment and technology that help our professionals do their jobs and  deliver the greatest results. If you are experiencing water damage, call SERVPRO Of West Erie County at (814) 806-1987.

Homeowner’s Insurance Policy Coverage

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Scenario 1: Your basement pipes froze and burst. You don’t realize it for a couple of weeks. Now there is inches of water on your basement floor with mold starting to grow.

Scenario 2: Broken shingles on your 50-year-old roof is allowing water to leak into the attic. Water is saturating the wood and insulation which is leading to mold in the attic.

Scenario 3: You don’t think much about the mold forming in your shower until one day you notice how unpleasant it looks and you’re concerned whether it may be causing health risks.

Do any of the above scenarios sound familiar? Or, have they happened to you? Do you think your insurance policy would cover these scenarios?

Most the time, these scenarios are not covered by the insurer. Home insurance policies usually don’t cover mold that resulted from a preventable water leak, flooding, or high humidity. Also, Insurance companies typically don’t pay for maintenance issues that insurers think a homeowner should have prevented such as properly ventilating a bathroom or maintaining lower humidity in a basement. The standard homeowner’s insurance policy does not cover water damage caused by a flood. Thus, if a flood causes water damage that leads to mold, the resulting mold issue would not be covered by your home policy.

Let’s discuss what options there are if you are unsure of your policy coverages for disaster preparedness.

How do I know what my homeowner’s insurance policy covers?

A homeowner’s insurance ‘usually’ does not cover the following:

  • Mold
  • Sewer Backup
  • Floods
  • Sinkholes
  • Earthquakes

A homeowner’s insurance ‘usually’ does cover the following:

  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Vandalism
  • Damage Caused by vehicles
  • Theft
  • Falling Objects
  • Weight of ice, snow, or sleet
  • Frozen Pipes

These are accidental and sudden incidents. Insurance companies typically cover this type of damage. Non-weather-related water damage is one of the most common home insurance claim and one of the most expensive!

What To Do:

Check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if there is any language or endorsements for claims concerning mold, sewer, flood, etc.  Some insurers require special add ons to cover mold, sewer backup, floods, etc. The insurance company may also place limits on the coverage which means limiting how much the insurer will pay for a related claim. Call your insurance agent to review the coverage you have and discuss the limit/coverage you desire. The least expensive insurance policy is not always the best.  You may be giving up coverage you think you automatically have with a homeowner’s policy.

Last but not least, if you experience a loss that you know will be covered and need to file a claim then always remember SERVPRO of West Erie County is just one call away! Our professional technicians will get your lives back in order and your home restored the right way, "Like it never even happened."
